Payments 2025 – A study by SRC Security Research & Consulting GmbH with professional support from Z_punkt The Foresight Company and Fraunhofer INT.
Instant payments, the digitalization of shopping, stricter regulation, payment initiation and account information services – it is already clear today that these topics will have a significant impact on the world of payment in the future. However, how exactly these factors are shaped and used depends crucially on drivers whose influence can be predicted with much less certainty:
How strong will fintechs become? What role are the internet giants aiming for? Will customers accept new payment methods? What authentication methods are available? How willing is the banking industry to cooperate?
The study “Paying 2025 – Scenarios for the future of payment systems in Germany” therefore does not predict the “one” true future. Rather, a survey of experts and several expert panels were used to identify the factors that are likely to have the greatest impact on the future of payments in the next decade.
Based on this, various consistent future scenarios were developed to help form a concrete picture of what payments could look like in ten years’ time. The aim of the study is to provide decision-makers in the payments sector with assistance in analyzing the opportunities and challenges of the future payments landscape.
