Why a new standard?

The PCI MPoC standard was developed to close previous gaps in the certification of mobile payment systems and to replace existing standards in the long term. A look at the development of previous standards shows why MPoC became necessary:

• PCI SPoC (Software-Based PIN Entry on COTS) – since 2018
  Enabled low-cost card readers for smartphones and tablets to accept chip and PIN transactions – an inexpensive alternative to traditional payment terminals.
• PCI CPoC (Contactless Payments on COTS) – since 2019
  Allowed merchants to accept contactless payments directly on Android devices with NFC function, without an additional card reader – particularly important for small businesses and retailers.
• PIN on Glass (Mastercard & Visa, 2020)
  Supplement to the CPoC standard to enable payments beyond the contactless limits with PIN entry.
• PCI MPoC (Mobile Payments on COTS) – since 2022
  MPoC combines the strengths of previous standards and provides a modular, flexible solution for future payment technologies. The standard supports both contactless payments and PIN entry on the same device and offers a scalable framework for developers and providers.
